The Mixed Six Podcast

Board games. Beer. Pop culture. And a little drunken philosophy.

Ep. 36: The Dangers of Couples Podcasting

Hey-ooo! It’s time for the Mixed Six again. This week, Sara and Brandy join the show to see what all the fuss is about. It’s twice the show with twice the hosts. If you like it, let us know in the comments so we can convince them to come back (hopefully within in a timetable faster than the year and a half it actually took to get them on the mics).

Destihl Brewery Wild Sour Series Synchopathic: In Dissecting Our Fun, we try to adapt some movies into board game mechanics.

Destihl Brewery Wild Sour Series Flanders Red: As the whole table was pretty obsessed with the new season of Queer Eye, Binge Binger is about our top three favorite makeovers from the remake.

Destihl Brewery Wild Sour Series Blueberry Gose: Getting Lit(erature) is about the books that got us all involved in this nerdy reading activity in the first place.

Destihl Brewery Wild Sour Series Here Gose Nothin: Ask Mixed Six wants to know which apocalypse or conspiracy theory we feel most capable of surviving.

Destihl Brewery Wild Sour Series Synchopathic Apricot: The listeners are feeling very bleak this week. The Mixed Six Mock Draft is about drafting a team of fictional educators to die in a zombie apocalypse.

Destihl Brewery Amra Mango IPA: Finally Drunk Enough, we get real about the dangers lurking within the couples’ game night.

Ep. 35: DeVostitutes

Our friend Baz is in town this week for an episode as jam-packed with content as Producer Ross’s table was packed with portly men. We got mock drafts, pairings, rapid fire question answering, and tasty beverages galore. Join us!

Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales Bamarillo: Get all your boxes in a row with this Dissecting Our Fun about spatial mechanics in board games.

Charleville Vineyard Brewing Flanders Red: In this Mixed Six Mock Draft, we create three, competition-ready roller derby teams out of living political figures.

2nd Shift Brewing’s Technical Ecstasy: Is teaching English the same as teaching Rhetoric? Find out in this episode’s COM Corner.

Uinta Brewing Co Lime Pilsner: In We Make a Pair, we select the finest alcoholic beverage choice to wash down your preferred brand of philosophy.

Stillwater Artisanal’s Insetto: It’s time for a fire sale! All questions must go in this edition of Ask Mixed Six.

Cathedral Square Brewery’s Gabriel Double India Pale Ale: Spencer’s Drunk Enough to drop some musings about agency on his co-hosts.

Ep 34: Stillwater Did It!

Producer Ross has returned! People sent us stuff! We didn’t get poisoned! Really, there’s just so much to be grateful for in this episode, it’s impossible to write it all down. You’ll have to listen to the episode to get it all.

Founder’s Lizard of Koz: Imperial Stout Brewed with Blueberries, Chocolate, and Vanilla aged in Bourbon Barrels: In Dissecting Our Fun, we interrogate the perplexing cultural phenomenon that is BoardGame Geek.

Daytrotter Pale Horse Pale Ale: Nerdsplainer is about the terrifying gasification of everything in society. Caleb makes a desperate plea to his brothers and sisters to make it stop.

Stillwater Artisanal Shoegaze Distorted Farmhouse Pale Ale: The Armchair Directors talk about their favorite three opening scenes.

Prairie Artisan Ales Twist: Sean Asks Mixed Six how to tell the difference between good arthouse and pretentious nonsense.

Firestone Velvet Merkin Oatmeal Stout: In a new segment called We Make a Pair, we recommend beers to go with things that don’t typically have an alcoholic accompaniment. In this inaugural version, we pair beers with Kurt Russell films.

Omnipollo and Evil Twin Brewing’s Pink Lemonade IPA: Finally Drunk Enough, Adam L. really tries to drive a rift between us by asking how it is to work with friends on a creative endeavor.

A Mixed Six Sampler

We’ve been doing this awhile, huh? If you’re new to The Mixed Six, we have enough episodes to cut together something like a clip show. Give it a listen and see if you like what we’re about.

Scholarly Count Orlok’s Black Pumpkin Ale: Dissecting Our Fun is our boardgame segment, and as boardgame snobs, we have games we love to hate. We share our top three.

Crown Valley Brewing’s Antique Amber American Ale: Caleb picks an innocuous listener question about S’mores and Spencer has some sort of audio fit as a response. It becomes a staple moment for the podcast.

Dogfish Head Midas Touch Ancient Ale: A Mixed Six Mock Draft involves picking fictional characters for a real-world activity. In our first such event, we draft a team of Marvel superheroes to compete in the Great British Bake-off.

Upland Brewing Co. Champagne Brand Velvet Beer: One of our listeners wants to know about what makes a great party anecdote. We don’t really give him advice, but our guest Rob Sith tells us a story about a time he almost got kidnapped in Transylvania.

Ommegong Brewery’s Rare Vos Amber Ale: In Getting Lit(erature), it appears our listener’s like to talk books with us. In this episode, we share our favorite guilty pleasure read.

Hoegaarden Wit Blanche: We try (and fail) to get profound once we hit beer six. In a segment called Drunk Enough, we talk about the complex problem of separating art from its artist’s ethics in this modern age.

Ep. 33: Is a Hot Dog a Podcast?

We ask the deep questions here on The Mixed Six: the questions other media outlets are afraid to ask. Join us for a fearless inquiry into the very foundations of phenomenology! Also, we drink some beers from North Carolina, so there’s that too.

Highland Brewing Company Cold Mountain Winter Ale: How do you get your RPG friends to become your boardgame friends and achieve the coveted Resse’s Pieces level of nerd friendship? We try to have it all in Dissecting Our Fun.

Bhramari Brewing Company The Good Fight Sour Pale Ale: We Nerdsplain some Binge Binger in this fusion segment because everyone wants to hear about Netflix’s Altered Carbon. Caleb provides the transhumanist 101 for those that haven’t read the books because the show sure as hell isn’t going to explain it to you.

Hi-wire Brewing Co. Hi-Wire Gose: In Getting Lit(erature), we invent a new genre…the remake novel. What writer’s would we recast to take another shot at a book’s content?

Catawba Brewery Co. Riverkeeper Apple Sour Ale: Ask Mixed Six is another Fire Sale! Every question must go!

Wicked Weed Brewing Hop Cocoa Porter Brewed with Cocoa Nibs: This Was a Mistake is about the fundamental attribution error plaguing nearly every political post since the inception of social media.

Highland Brewing Co. Mandarina IPA: Finally Drunk Enough, we re-examine the “bumper sticker” philosophy memes bouncing around the internet. Do they have any worth, or do they just undermine the practice of actual introspection and inquiry.

Ep. 32: Stout Lads

Caleb is re-appropriating the term adults used to call him fat by drinking as many Stouts as possible this episode. Oddly enough, it doesn’t seem to be helping his weight problem, but, by god, it makes for good listening! Join us for an all stout episode of The Mixed Six.

Brooklyn Brewing’s Black Chocolate Stout: In Dissecting Our Fun, we discuss what to look for in a tabletop game review (besides listening to the Mixed Six, of course).

Bell’s Brewing Co.’s Kalamazoo Stout, Stout Brewed With Brewer’s Licorice: The Armchair Directors have been given and the impossible task of re-casting directors for a perfect trilogy of films. How can one improve on the live-action TMNT movies? Is such a thing even possible?

Bent River Brewing Company Uncommon Stout: Nerdsplainer is a call to action as Caleb begs his community to give up on all this Marvel/DC crap and get into the real action happening in Bollywood.

Brewfist Italian Ales The Spaghetti Western, Imperial Chocolate Coffee Stout Aged in Grappa Barrels: We had so many great questions this episode, we had to just try them all. Welcome to the first Ask Mixed Six Fire Sale! All questions must go!

Cathedral Square Brewery’s Holy Moly Imperial Stout: In Living with Humans, we talk about reciprocity in relationships.

Big Muddy Brewing’s S’mores Stout: Finally Drunk Enough, we delve into the saying, “Boredom is a sign of a weak mind.” Instilled in the hosts from childhood, is this a sound life tenant or merely the intellectual equivalent of “do you even lift, bro?”

Year-in-Review Survey

Hello everyone!
We’ve been at this for more than a year now. Spencer, Producer Ross, and I (I’m…I’m Caleb. I’m that one) are really proud of the show and absolutely blessed that all of you have helped us create it. We want to keep this show expanding and improving in the months to come. We love recording it so much, and we feel the need to make it the best podcast possible as a sign of our gratitude to everyone that’s helped us get this far.
As it is our listeners who got us this far, we thought you would be the best source for ideas on how to grow in the future. We’ve put together a survey to help make decisions moving forward. If you’ve ever listened to an episode — for any reason, for free or on Patreon — we would really appreciate it if you took the time to fill one out. Every response helps us get a clearer picture of where we need to go from here.
Thanks for the feedback!

Ep. 31: INSERT GLUTEN PUN HERE

If the wheat has you down, do we ever have an episode for you. In an effort to help our gluten intolerant loved ones, this episode is all gluten-free beer. We can’t promise gluten-free conversation though: we say the word a lot. Gluten gluten gluten.

Daura Damm: In Dissecting Our Fun, it’s time we tackle our first Legacy-type game with T.I.M.E. Stories. Worth the hype? Find out!

Redbridge Gluten-free Sourgham Beer:  James D wants to know what drinks to pair with a viewing of the original Star Wars trilogy. The Armchair Director makes recommendations.

Shandy Daura Damm: Is early-access and DLC the culprit in ruining ‘good games?’ Ready Player Drunk thinks the issue is a bit more complicated.

Omission Brewing Co. IPA: In Mixed Six Mock Draft, we have to populate a tribe for the reality team Survivor using only philosophers. Let us know who one #TeamCaleb or #Team Spencer!

Omission Brewing Co. Lager: Ask Mixed Six wants to know about the one nerdy subculture you wished you hadn’t missed out on. Spencer makes a terrible mistake!

New Belgium Brewing’s Glutiny Pale Ale: Finally Drunk Enough to pontificate about the canon, we ponder whether or not there is any value in teaching philosophy to students before they get to university.

Ep. 30: Sunday Morning Love Triangles

Welcome back! We’re hear to paint tragic comic strip narratives and fix your love lives. You know, the usual stuff. Here’s what to expect in this exciting new episode.

Mars Community Brewing Ruby’s Tears Gose Style Ale with Hibiscus and Coriander: In Dissecting Our Fun, Jacob Derby asks about games that benefit from verticality on the Z-access.

Cathedral Square Brewery’s Repent! Rye IPA: Ask Mixed Six is all about our bottom three holiday songs. It’s going to be a tough pick!

Omnipollo’s Shploing!! Mango S’mores: India Pale Ale Brewed with Marshmallows, Graham Crackers, Salt, and Lactose Sugar with Mango and Vanilla: In Armchair Director, we lament the loss of Every Frame a Painting and talk about the video essay as a genre.

Main St. 4204 Brewing Co’s Pecan Brown Ale Brewed with Pecans: This Was a Mistake deals with an anonymous listener’s tragic misstep — sustaining a romantic relationship without mutual sexual attraction.

Charleville Brewing Co Box of Chocolate Belgian-Style Quadrupel Ale: Mixed Six Mock Draft is all about creating a tragic love triangle amongst the characters in Saturday Morning Comic Strips.

Urban Chestnut Brewing’s Urban Underdog American Lager: Finally Drunk Enough and with the dust clearing, we offer our final thoughts on the whole Patreon fiasco.

Ep. 29: Drinking the Forms

Howdy everyone! Welcome back to The Mixed Six. Like Greek philosophers of old, join us as we stroll the gardens and parthenon, discussing the nature of truth and important topics of the day. But we’ll be more buzzed because our beer has more alcohol than that crappy B.C. wine.

Santa Fe Brewing Co Adobe Igloo Winter Ale Brewed with Cacao and Chile: In Dissecting Our Fun, people need to know the steps towards backing a winner in the tabletop Kickstarter space. We lay down our Mixed Six investment tips.

Big Muddy Brewing Blueberry Blonde Ale Brewed with natural Blueberry Flavor: The Mixed Six Mock Draft tasks us with curating the best compilation of one-hit wonders of all time. Spencer and Caleb square-off in the arena.

Omnipollo’s Pleroma Raspberry Crème Brûlée Sour Ale Brewed with Lactose Sugar with Raspberries and Vanilla Added: Welp…we tried to poison Spencer. And then people Ask Mixed Six what to do about postmodernism gone too far.

Wasatch Brewery Polygamy Nitro Porter: In Ready Player Drunk, Ross and Caleb explain to Spencer about the dark underground economy built around video game coimpletionism.

Main St. 4204 Brewing Co Strawberry Juele: As Professional Drinkers, we couldn’t pass up a question like Chris’s: what beer represents the platonic ideal of the five-point rating system.

Ska Brewing’s Modus Operandi India Pale Ale: Finally Drunk Enough, we discuss the possibility of turning off the impulse to make narrative in this modern age.
